Anyone who knows me knows I am addicted to tea, specifically green tea. Green tea is actually 1 of the 3 teas you should be drinking. I didn’t grow up around tea at all, my parents were coffee drinkers and that’s the smell I would wake up to every morning. It wasn’t until I found myself living in Seoul, South Korea that I was exposed to tea, and I fell in love.
Whether its my first cup of tea in the morning or my favourite mid-day cup, tea has been a part of my daily routine for years. After discovering the great health benefits green tea possessed I decided to look into other teas. I’ve found 3 that I now blend into my life, they taste great and the bonus is that all these teas have great health benefits! At the beginning of my day or the end of a long one, nothing beats a relaxing cup of tea!
There are a number of teas out there that are beneficial, and many come from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Green tea, Oolong tea, Pu-erh tea, white tea and black tea all come from the Camellia sinensis plant. What makes each different depends on the way the leaves are processed after harvesting.
When I was in China I got a chance to visit a tea shop and was educated first hand on the process, such as white tea is the least processed. Different processing methods give tea leaves from the same plant their own flavor, and most are beneficial for our health. A few benefits of tea is that it is hydrating, it can reduce the risk of heart attack, and it can even increase the body’s ability to burn fat as fuel which helps when exercising – muscle endurance.
GREEN TEA – Green tea is probably the most studied type of tea, because of its high concentration of a plant chemical called EGCG. EGCG helps to eliminate the free radicals that make a mess in our bodies and has been researched for cancer and heart disease prevention. The Mayo Clinic researchers tested green tea’s effect on patients with chronic lymphocytic leukemia, finding that most of the individuals’ lymph nodes decreased in size when consuming green tea. Another study showed that drinking one cup of green tea per day could decrease the risk of cardiovascular disease.
WHITE TEA – White tea has many health benefits and can even keep you looking young. According to a study at London’s Kingston University, white tea protects the structural proteins of the skin, specifically elastin and collagen. Similar to green tea, white tea contains catechins, which can possibly help fight cancer and cardiovascular disease, while a study, published in the Journal of Nutrition & Metabolism, says that white tea may block fat cells from forming and can, therefore, speed up the fat-burning process.
OOLONG TEA – Oolong tea also has great health benefits just like the other two previously mentioned. Oolong team has the second-highest caffeine level (after black tea) and the second-highest antioxidant levels (after green tea). A study showed that women who drank oolong tea had a higher fat burning rate that those who only drank water.
There you have it, 3 teas you should be drinking. So what are you waiting for? If you haven’t already, check them out and let me know what your favourite tea is.
