I’m big on clean eating, but when I don’t have time to make anything first thing in the morning I rely on my powerhouse smoothie.
Enter: Sun Warrior. I have heard a lot of good things about this brand but just recently decide to try it for myself.
The Classic Protein Raw Vegan Vanilla was what I dove into as vanilla usually seems to be my favourite flavour when it comes to protein powders overall. For us, non-athletes ( wink ), this protein powder will give you energy for the day, keep you full, and balance your blood sugar. The best part is, its sugar-free!
Once you’ve got your protein base it’s time to increase the nutrient factor.
I recommend that smoothies be about equal portions of greens and fruit to maximize nutrients. If you’re a green drinker like myself, you can add more greens than fruits, which is what I do all the time :). My favorite smoothie is actually spinach, parsley and baby kale, it may not taste the best but it’s so good for your body. For fruit, add in any of your favourites — most fruits work, but my favourites are strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries, I usually go with these because of their major antioxidant potential. Antioxidants are important; they protect our bodies from damage by free radicals, unstable molecules that can damage cellular structures and contribute to aging and diseases like cancer. If I’m drinking this smoothie before a workout I will add a banana to the mix for some added energy and blood sugar sustainability plus it adds a little sweetness making it delicious. It’s also a good idea to add healthy fats like almond butter and coconut oil for added energy, blood sugar stabilization, and they can also help slim the waist. Almonds contain compounds that limit the amount of fat absorbed by the body, so some passes through undigested (YES!). And get this: A study published in Lipids found that dietary supplementation of coconut oil actually reduced abdominal obesity. Smoothies are very filling but the reason people may feel hungry shortly after drinking a smoothie for breakfast is because they don’t have enough healthy fat and protein in their blended drink!
And there you have it! Super simple, right? Here’s my recipe. Try it for a few days, and see how great you feel!
1 cup spinach
Small handful of blueberries and blackberries
1 small banana
1/2 cup of kale
1 scoop Classic Protein Raw Vegan Vanilla
1 tbsp raw organic coconut oil
1 or 2 tbsp(s) raw almond butter
1 tsp chia seeds
