A vacation was definitely needed after this past NBA All-Star Weekend 2016 in Toronto. I write from a beach in sunny Jamaica with a sore throat and no voice, NBA All-Star wore me out! From NBA Fit Clinics to A Day of Service, to the NBA Celebrity Game this past week has been non-stop movement, but a lot of fun.
Over the last two days, people have asked what my favourite part of NBA All-Star Weekend was, and honestly, I can’t pick just one event, I enjoyed every minute of the weekend, even though my body is now paying for it With that said, here are a few highlights of my past week running through the six.
Visited the ‘Hospital for Sick Kids’ with my NBA/WNBA Family Ron Harper, Big Bob Lanier, George Gervin – The Iceman, Isaiah Austin, Tamika Catchings, Mr. and Mrs. Paul as well as Brain Shaw and Jason Collins ( not pictured here ). Hospital visits are so humbling, if I can put a smile on kids faces and take their mind off of what they are going through for a few hours its the best feeling. I found myself playing pool with a young boy named Draven, who was so sweet, but he kick my butt :).
Friday afternoon I was elbow deep in a bin of onions. NBA Cares All-Star Day of Service helped give back to those in need in the Greater Toronto Area. In partnership with the Daily Bread Food Bank, NBA & WNBA players spent the afternoon donating their time to help re-pack thousands of pounds of food which will be distributed to families in need.
Thursday night I attended the “Giants of Africa” screening, a documentary by Toronto Raptors GM, Masai Ujiri. I took in the premier with a few of my girls, Ruth Riley & Tamika Catchings. Masai has done such a great job with Giants of Africa and this film was a great watch. I truly enjoyed it!
Had to catch up with Kenny ‘The Jet’ Smith before the weekend was over. Kenny has thrown a party during NBA All-Star Weekend for the last 10+ years and this year didn’t disappoint.
The NBA did such a great job hosting many Fit Clinics throughout the G.T.A. I found myself in Scarborough, Ontario with Bob Lanier interacting with 100+ middle school kids. The energy in the gym was magnificent, fun times with the kids.
Super early morning VIP Clinic & Meet n Greet on the All-Star Court with my NBA Brothers Matt Bonner & Dwight Powell. Although it was 7 am on a Sunday, the kids at this clinic came ready to play!
Tamika Catchings and I put on the First-ever NBA All-Star Girls Basketball Clinic ( ASBC ) at Ryerson University. Over 100 girls filled the gym to learn from the Pro’s, it was such a great day with so much talent in the building, our staff and volunteers were amazing and it would not have been possible without them. I can’t wait for Charlotte 2017
We gave away a pair of NBA All-Star Saturday Night tickets to one lucky winner at our All-Star Girls Basketball Clinic. Contest winner – Jasmine and her mom joined us at the Air Canada Centre to watch the Skill competition, the 3 point shootout and dunk contest.
Tamika Catchings and I didn’t stop at the All-Star Bball Clinic on Saturday, we executed an exclusive event, Sunday, at NBA Centre Court for 25 of our All-Star Girls Basketball Clinic participants & 25 boys from my NBA Brother, Corey Joseph’s team. Providing Free tickets to each kid + a guest, giving these youth an NBA All-Star experience to remember.
I had so much fun playing in the Celebrity Game Friday night for Team Canada, Coach Drake had us well prepared ‘wink’. I wonder if he is going to take this experience and add coaching to the many things he already does – Rapper, Actor, Raptors Ambassador, Coach
And that’s a wrap! NBA All-Star Weekend 2016 in Toronto was a blast, and I look forward to doing it again next year in Charlotte.
Extras from the weekend!
