Lunch at Elmwood Spa

I know what you’re thinking, why did I go to a spa to have lunch? Well, the truth is, because the lunch here is AWESOME! The Terrace Restaurant gave me a chance to sit down and catch up with one of my girlfriends.

Elmwood Spa is a 5 story brick building located in the heart of downtown Toronto and the only place I get to have lunch in my robe :). The Terrace Restaurant, located on the 4th floor delivers a 3 course meal and all the dishes are  full of flavour. The servers are super friendly and warm which adds to the overall experience.

Started off with the Thai Butternut Squash Soup with carrot, sweet potato and lemongrass. In this fall weather, this soup hit the spot, Yum!

Following the soup this cucumber and melon salad was brought to the table. Cantaloupe, honey dew, watermelon, artisan lettuce all topped with a green tea vinaigrette this dish was really good. What I love about this restaurant is that all their items on the menu are healthy.

Cucumber & Melon Salad

After devouring the cucumber and melon salad I was a little full, but then the salmon came out. Maple dijon, cous cous, baby vegetables, I don’t have any words for this dish other than delicious. I’ve had it here before and had to try it again just to make sure it was equally good 🙂 And it was

As expected lunch was awesome, from the appetizers to the dessert ( not pictured here ), the chef did his thing. The only thing that was left to do after such a great meal was go into the sauna for 10 mins hoping to sweat out all the calories I just ingested, unfortunately it didn’t work.

Powerhouse Smoothie

I’m big on clean eating, but when I don’t have time to make anything first thing in the morning I rely on protein powders.

Enter: Sun Warrior. I heard of this brand a while ago but just recently decide to try it as I know its primarily rice protein powder.

The Vanilla Warrior Blend was what I dove into as it usually seems to be my favourite flavour when it comes to protein powders overall. For us, non-athletes :), this protein powder gives you energy for the day, it keeps you full, and balances blood sugar. The best part is its sugar-free!

Building your smoothie

Once you’ve got your protein base it’s time to increase the nutrient factor.

I recommend that smoothies be equal portions of greens and fruit to maximize nutrients. If you’re a green drinker like myself, you can add more greens than fruits. My favorite smoothie is actually made up of spinach, parsley and kale.  For fruit, add in your favourites — most fruits work, but my favourites are strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries for their major antioxidant potential. If I’m drinking this before a workout I’ll throw in a banana to the mix. Now we can’t forget the healthy fats, these will add energy and stabilize the blood sugar, my favourite fats to use are almond butter and coconut oil. Smooties, when made correctly can fill you up real quickly and the reason why some people may feel hungry shortly after drinking a smoothie for breakfast is due to the fact they don’t have enough healthy fat and protein in their blended drink!

So there you have it! Super simple, right? Here’s my recipe. Try it and let me know how great you feel!

Powerhouse Smoothie

1 cup spinach
Small handful of blueberries and blackberries
4-5 Strawberries
1 mall banana
1/2 cup of kale
1 scoop Sunwarrior Warrior Blend
1 tbsp raw organic coconut oil
1 tbsp raw almond butter
1 tsp chia seeds

Blend and enjoy!

BUY EXPERIENCES, NOT THINGS

Walking The Great Wall in China

Walking The Great Wall of China

The older I get, the less material things matter to me, and I would go as far to say that I would rather spend my money on an experience rather than tangible things. Looking back on purchases I’ve made, (specifically purses, my weakness), experiences create more happiness than possessions.

We, as a society, stop appreciating things we are constantly exposed to. So that IPhone we waited in line to get the day it launched or the cute skirt we fell in love with the moment we saw it, now sits in a drawer or back of the closet.

Experiences, however, leave us with memories we can hold onto for a lifetime. Even the imperfect bad experiences can turn into a good story when you’re sharing it with friends 🙂 It’s the memories that go hand-in-hand with experiences and memories are priceless.

Experiences also give us opportunities to connect with other people. I recall flying to China and striking up a conversation with an Asian man sitting next to me who eventually told me about the best places to eat in China. None of the places he mentioned were on any China to-do list, but they were pretty darn good. 🙂

So buy that plane ticket you have debated about, set off on a new adventure and enjoy the experience of it all.

Do you agree? Let me know your thoughts

Importance of regular workouts and exercises

Regular workouts and exercises can improve not only your health, but also your lifestyle. Exercise can boost your energy and you would feel better. Exercises and workouts can also enhance your longevity. The tremendous health benefits of workouts, exercises and physical activities are impossible to ignore. Even if it’s not possible for you to exercise daily, you should at least exercise or indulge in physical activities 4 times a week.

Let’s look at the important benefits of regular workouts and exercises:

  1. You can control your weight by regular workouts and exercises: You burn calories when you take part in physical activities. Therefore, exercise can help you to control your weight. If you are unable to exercise every day, then you can choose to take the stairs instead of the elevator.

  1. Regular exercise can prevent diseases: Regular physical activities can help you to manage a lot of health issues such as arthritis, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, stroke and depression. Regular exercises and workouts result in blood flowing smoothly in your body which reduces cardiovascular diseases to a huge extent.
  1. Exercise plays the role of a mood healer: Regular workouts and exercises not only improves your physical health but also improves your mental health. After a stressful day, a good workout at the gym can lift up your mood instantly. If you are unable to do a workout, then you can go for brisk walking. Physical activity stimulates certain chemicals in the brain that would make you feel happy. Thus, exercise plays the role of a mood healer. You would also feel confident about your appearance when you exercise.
  1. Regular exercise can boost energy: Regular physical activity can boost your energy and improve the strength of your muscles. This is because exercise delivers nutrients and oxygen to the cells and tissues of your body. This results in the lungs and heart to work efficiently.
  1. Exercise promotes good sleep: In today’s world, when half of the population is insomniac, regular exercise can help you to sleep better. However, you should not exercise before bedtime as it will keep you too energized all night.

After studying the important health benefits of regular workouts and exercises, you must merge them into your daily schedule. Even if you are busy, take out some time for brisk walking at least. You must indulge in physical activities at least 4 times a week. A sedentary lifestyle is not a healthy lifestyle. Get up, go outside, breathe in and exercise for a good life.

Taking it back to where it all started.

It was in the gym at Armadale Public School that I was first introduced to the game. At 6’0 in the 7th grade I was taller than everyone in the school, including most of the teachers. So it only fit that I try out for the basketball team even though I had never picked up a basketball before, right? Well basketball stuck and I have been playing ever since. Yesterday I found myself back at my old elementary school preparing to read my new book, CREE AND SCOOTER HIT THE SLOPES IN BRITISH COLUMBIA, to the kids.

Of course Cree and Scooter had to join me :). We had a blast, I’m really happy kids are enjoying THE ADVENTURES OF CREE AND SCOOTER.

So I thought all I was going to do at my old school was read, but to my surprise, Armadale Public School dedicated their new basketball courts to me. Man was I caught off guard when they raised a Tammy Sutton-Brown banner in the gym, my eyes started to tear up as I saw my name. It was at that moment I looked out at all the grade 4-8 students that sat in the gym during the dedication presentation, and all I could think of was how I was once just like them. I once sat exactly where they sat on the gym floor. WOW, I have come a long way, I have been blessed with so much.

The kids were all attentive as I spoke to them about the importance of education, hard work, goal setting and believing in themselves.
I DARE YOU WHO IS READING THIS.
I dare you to encourage and motivate a child today. I double dare you to inspire and teach a child to follow their dreams, I triple dare you to make a difference in a child today, build all these qualities into them and encourage them to achieve success.
Try to make a difference in someone’s life today. We can all positively impact the life of another.

Back on Campus

I can’t remember the last time I was on a college campus. It felt so good to be back at Rutgers. Driving to the RAC was a little challenging with all the construction going on, but I eventually found my way, lol. Man I can’t believe it has been 10 years since I graduated, wow how time flies ( Am I really that old? LOL ). Coach Stringer is one of my fav people in the world so it is always great to see her. After all these years coaching she still has the same intensity for the game, guess that is why she is so Imagegreat. She has a really good group of girls who I enjoyed watch play Tues night, RUTGERS vs TENN. The game was so exciting to watch ( as I knew it would be, because it was 2 of the greatest coach’s in the game going head to head ). Unfortunately Rutgers lost 😦 BUT they did play hard and I was proud of them. I can’t remember the last time I attended a college basketball game because I’m usually playing overseas this time of year, but I had so much fun. I enjoyed every min I was on campus :). Maybe one day I’ll go back and get my masters. Key word, MAYBE 🙂

THERE IS NO PLACE LIKE HOME

I landed back in Toronto today and felt refreshed. This is my favorite place in the world hands down. Of course I was not expecting to be home this early, but I can’t turn back the hands of time so there is no need to sulk, gotta move on.

I want to thank all our Fever fans who have supported us throughout the season. Deff appreciated all the love. Will miss u all.

TAMMY SUTTON-BROWN DAY OF WELLNESS

Landed in Indianapolis early this morning. I probably got about 3 hours sleep last night, therefore I slept the whole flight ( although I could have used some more since I was nudged awake by my teammate. LOL ). But knowing My “Day of Wellness” was later in the day I felt energized once I walked off the plane. Today was the second-annual TSBDOW. This has to be one of my favorite things to do, pamper women who don’t get pampered much, give them a day to relax and forget any troubles they may be dealing with. All women deserve a little time for themselves, … a little ME time. I’m a big fan ME time 🙂

Caring for the women who reside at the local shelter, we provided haircuts, massages, manicures and pedicures courtesy of Natural Concepts. As well Kroger was a big help by providing a fruit platter and beverages which the women thoroughly enjoyed … I mean really enjoyed cause nothing was left on the plate when we were done. LOL

I had so much fun today, and it would not have been possible without the staff at Natural Concepts, they were amazing. As well as the Kroger family who beautifully put a display together that was beyond what they had to do. And finally, my teammates who donated clothing, the women were so thankful, they walked away genuinely happy.

The Julian Center is in critical need of numerous donations from toiletries, bedding, food pantry items, clothing and other miscellaneous items. A complete wish list of items can be found by visiting http://www.juliancenter.org/wish_list.html.

The smiles that the women walk away with are priceless, and the reason I will continue to do these days. Can’t wait to do the next one.

GO GREEN

The world has a fixed amount of natural resources – some of which are already depleted. I intend to leave my children and grandchildren with the same standard of living I enjoyed growing up. But in order for this to happen WE must preserve our environment. We save for cars, homes, and college educations, but what about saving clean air, water, and fuel sources for future generations?

FACT is the more we throw away, the more space we take up in landfills. And when those landfills become full, taxpayers have to build new ones. That means more $$$ out of our pockets. But, if we throw away less by recycling, reducing and reusing, the longer the landfills will last. This translates to keeping $$$ in my pockets in addition to the more important benefit of preserving the earth and natural resources.

As players we go out into the community, and some events stand out more than others. Today was one of those days because I know we did our part for the future. By planting trees and picking up trash with the youth of our community the Fever educated a number of kids on the importance of the 3 R’s. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, we talked about it, AND now WE ALL need to practice it. We need a cleaner world. Let’s ALL do our part!

CHAMPIONS

This is what the finals is about … Tight scoring games, great competitive battles, and WWE physicality … Every possession counts, Turnovers are crucial, the fight of our team was amazing.

So proud of my girls, we had a tough season, filled with many challenges, but this is what we were all brought together to play for. What a way to end my time here in Istanbul. In every league, no matter what level, there is only one team that ends their season with a win. GRATEFUL

THIS IS HOW THE DAY WENT:

If u are a person who gets easily sea sick this was not the trip for u … We hopped on a water taxi to the game. The waters were not that calm so there were moments when we rocked side to side, it felt like a roller coaster at times. LOL …. On another occasion I would have gone out on the front of the boat and gotten a tan. But today was all business, today was all concentration, today was all about a WIN.

Once again it was only fitting that the top 2 teams faced each other in the finals. Galatasary, our rival, a team stacked with so much talent, WHICH included 2 of my Fever teammates who I know go hard so I knew it would be a competitive battle… And it was just that. Best of 5 series we won 3 straight, but that was no indication of how Gala competed. They challenged us, all the games were close, after every game I found a new bruise. LOL … I’m so proud of my girls and how they handled this season. We had many challenges over the 8 month season but we stuck together, fought through and over came. They say experiences are the best teachers, if that is the case, we all learned a great deal this season.

After a long season this was the perfect ending… 4 championships in my 4 yrs at Fenerbahce, I feel so blessed. I give credit to Fenerbahce management for keeping the core Turkish players together all these yrs. I love these girls, not only as players but they are the kindest, sweetest group of girls u will ever meet. They are my sisters ( from another mother of course 🙂

But now it’s off to Indiana. We went from teammates to competitors to teammates again. Catch, Katie, and Ebony, the 4 of us are back in Indy together, ON THE SAME TEAM, and looking forward to another great WNBA season.
